April 13th is Brazilian National Anthem Day. On April 13, 1831, the National Anthem was played for the first time in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Before that, the anthem considered national was the one composed by Dom Pedro I after Brazil's Independence in 1822, which today is called the Independence Anthem.
The conductor Francisco Manuel da Silva (1795-1865), co-founder of the Imperial Academy of Music and the National Institute of Music, was responsible for creating the music for the anthem, i.e. the instrumental part. The music for the anthem was composed shortly after the events that marked April 7, 1831. On that day, the former Emperor Pedro I abdicated the throne in favor of his son, Pedro II.
Pedro's abdication was due to internal and external political pressure. Many Brazilians, including politicians, artists, journalists and intellectuals, opposed to Pedro I and the Lusitanian supporters of the emperor, cheered his abdication. Francisco Manuel was one of them and composed the anthem to greet the future that would come with the new emperor, who was born in Brazil.
As we know, Pedro II, born in Rio de Janeiro, was still a child when the abdication took place. It was therefore necessary to set up a government regime to prepare the ground for the new emperor. This regime became known as the Regency Period. Brazilians such as the conductor Francisco Manuel had great expectations of this new phase in Brazilian politics.
The national anthem was very important for the history of Brazil, because it was because of it that Emperor Pedro II made the coup of majority and became the last emperor of Brazil.
Hino Nacional Brasileiro- Primeiro ato (Portuguese)
Ouviram do Ipiranga as margens plácidas
De um povo heroico, o brado retumbante
E o Sol da liberdade, em raios fúlgidos
Brilhou no céu da pátria nesse instante
Se o penhor dessa igualdade
Conseguimos conquistar com braço forte
Em teu seio, ó liberdade
Desafia o nosso peito a própria morte
Ó Pátria amada
Idolatrada
Salve! Salve!
Brasil, um sonho intenso, um raio vívido
De amor e de esperança, à terra desce
Se em teu formoso céu, risonho e límpido
A imagem do Cruzeiro resplandece
Gigante pela própria natureza
És belo, és forte, impávido colosso
E o teu futuro espelha essa grandeza
Terra adorada
Entre outras mil
És tu, Brasil
Ó Pátria amada!
Dos filhos deste solo, és mãe gentil
Pátria amada, Brasil!
Hino Nacional Brasileiro- Segundo ato
Deitado eternamente em berço esplêndido
Ao som do mar e à luz do céu profundo
Fulguras, ó Brasil, florão da América
Iluminado ao Sol do Novo Mundo!
Do que a terra mais garrida
Teus risonhos, lindos campos têm mais flores
Nossos bosques têm mais vida
Nossa vida, no teu seio, mais amores
Ó Pátria amada
Idolatrada
Salve! Salve!
Brasil, de amor eterno seja símbolo
O lábaro que ostentas estrelado
E diga o verde-louro dessa flâmula
Paz no futuro e glória no passado
Mas se ergues da justiça a clava forte
Verás que um filho teu não foge à luta
Nem teme, quem te adora, a própria morte
Terra adorada
Entre outras mil
És tu, Brasil
Ó Pátria amada!
Dos filhos deste solo, és mãe gentil
Pátria amada, Brasil!
Brazilian National Anthem - Act One (English)
They heard from Ipiranga the placid shores
Of a heroic people, the resounding cry
And the sun of liberty, in fiery rays
Shone in the sky of the homeland at that instant
If the pledge of this equality
We were able to conquer with a strong arm
In your bosom, O freedom
Our breasts defy death itself
O beloved country
Idolized
Hail! Hail!
Brazil, an intense dream, a vivid ray
Of love and hope descends to earth
If in your beautiful sky, bright and clear
The image of the Cruzeiro shines
Giant by nature
You are beautiful, you are strong, you are a mighty colossus
And your future mirrors that greatness
Beloved land
Among a thousand others
It's you, Brazil
O beloved country!
Of the children of this soil, you are a gentle mother
Beloved homeland, Brazil!
Brazilian National Anthem - Act Two
Lying eternally in a splendid cradle
To the sound of the sea and the light of the deep sky
Fulguras, O Brazil, flower of America
Illuminated by the sun of the New World!
Than the most garish land
Your laughing, beautiful fields have more flowers
Our woods have more life
Our life, in your bosom, more love
O beloved country
Idolized
Hail! Hail!
Brazil, may eternal love be your symbol
The starry banner you bear
And let the green-blond of this banner say
Peace in the future and glory in the past
But if you raise the strong club of justice
You will see that a son of yours does not run away from the fight
Nor does he who adores you fear death itself
Beloved land
Among a thousand others
It is you, Brazil
O beloved country!
Of the children of this soil, you are a gentle mother
Beloved homeland, Brazil!
